Public bug reported: The rfkill key (Fn+F2) on my EeePC 701 (running Ubuntu Netbook Remix) does nothing by default. xev shows it correctly generates XF86WLAN when pressed.
Following a suggestion found at https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=485322, modprobing rfkill- input makes it work correctly. (After modprobing rfkill-input and using Fn+F2 to disable the wireless, the driver gets confused by the sudden removal of the hardware and becomes unable to recover until a reboot; even suspending/resuming is not enough. But that is a separate bug.) I have no idea which package should be responsible for modprobing it. I chose module-init-tools to start with since it owns /etc/modules.
