Tested with Jaunty Live CD. Same exact problem still exists.

Permissions on .gvfs folder are set to 700 in order to prevent
unauthorized access of virtual file systems by other users of local
system. vim and some other applications are running chmods and passing
these permissions through to the virtual file system to the underlying
non-virtual file system.
