After having more trouble with the kernel which prevented me from
starting, the error disappeared after a system repair. I repaired the
installation via the chroot option from the alternate CD and ran a
reinstall, followed by dist-upgrade from there. This fixed it, so I
suppose there was something screwed up with the packages I had
installed. Sorry for inconvenience.
