I also get the same random crashes in X. I'm using the free driver that
comes with Ubuntu (nv). I was getting black screens while trying the
Nvidia supplied driver (180.44) installed both manually and using the
repository. The legacy drivers (173 and 177) didn't work either; it
crashes before it even loads X/desktop. I have not tried nouveau but I
suspect the result will be the same.
