I have trouble usind CUPS too. Architecture: amd64 DistroRelease: latest Kubuntu with KDE 4.2 NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia HW: Parallel-Printer (HP6p) connected through PAR<->USB adapter.
Printer is connected through USB, after a few pages the Printer is gone (lsusb). Sometimes switch printer off/on or replugging USB helps, mostly only a reboot. Since the Printer starts printing, it seems not to be a cable/adapter problem.
