Happened to me from an upgrade as well. I also went from Intrepid to
Jaunty. I'm not using any encrypted disks. Back when the problem first
popped up for me I kept getting messages about only "partial upgrades"
being possible.

As of the alpha builds I've been able to mount /dev/pts in fstab to work
around the issue. I'm not sure that I ever had an issue with shm. This
happened on my laptop which is kept pretty sparse in terms of
applications (basically just a basic install with a lamp-server and
virtualbox).
