Public bug reported:
when upgrading from 8.10 to 9.04 my /boot somehow became read-only.
Upgrader crashed and a very painfully slow attempt to downgrade back to the old
setup / recover itself.
had to re-mount /boot and do dpkg -r and apt-get -f install.
