Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usplash

Hi,

I have been trying to figure out why one machine had usplash working and
another did not.

I was able to determine that installing the package 'linux-restricted-
modules' which brings in:

binutils-static linux-restricted-modules linux-restricted-
modules-2.6.28-11-generic linux-restricted-modules-common

was enough to fix this.

I do not understand why I should have to install anything from
restricted in order to get usplash working.

I have been able to track down, I think, the issue to:

/usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/usplash

which is part of usplash. I am not clear why that would fail to run /
execute and not put usplash_write into the initrd.

Naturally, removing the package, means that it continues to work. Sigh.

Any thoughts on why? Or where to look?
