since pppd brings up your broadband connection on boot, it seems you
have configured it through wvdial and in /etc/network/interfaces.
NetworkManager doesnt support managing your modem on top of it.
Also you didnt attach any information about your crash. If you can
reproduce, submit the crash file created in /var/crash by double
clicking on it.
