I was running update manager with the computer unplugged. As it was
going to take a long time, I left the netbook unattended, and proceeded
to completely forget about it. I plugged it in in the morning, and the
computer showed some normal looking boot text (though normally simply
shows udev graphical boot). Then started gdm and everything seems to be
working normally, except for the crash report. I assume that the
computer tried to suspend when the battery ran down. If it tried to
hibernate, there's not a hope of that happening, as there is very little
space on the disk.
