If you are at a prompt. You can still update.
To bring up networking (hooked up via ethernet):
sudo ifconfig eth0 up
sudo dhclient
Then to update:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
This will upgrade you with all the packages.
Also what happened to your system, seems different from what Jacy
Fan is reporting. Who at least got failsafe X to come up.
