I followed your advice and booted jaunty beta with a usb stick. Suspend
worked three times in a row with absolutely no problems with standard
config.

I had a really hard time by figuring out how to boot via usb with my
machine, which doesn't support usb booting. I will update this wiki page
(https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromUSB) shortly with my
findings.
