(Temporarily affecting alsa-utils until we can pinpoint where during
startup things are belly-up)
This symptom is linked to bug 315971 if you're using PulseAudio. To help
narrow things down, I'll need people to reboot but not login to
GNOME/KDE/Xfce/whatever from the display manager. Instead:
switch to a tty (e.g., ctrl+alt+F1)
log in
sudo -s
amixer >> before_login.amixer.txt
log out
switch back to display manager
log in to GNOME/KDE/Xfce/whatever
open a Terminal/Konsole/urxvt/whatever
amixer >> after_login.amixer.txt
Attach both files to this bug report.
