Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: alsa-utils

I have a new Asus EEE pc 904ha. Whenever I mute the audio, there is a
fairly loud crackling sound. This only happens when some application is
attempting to play sound, and only when I mute the volume from the icon
in the top right corner of the screen (or via gnome-volume-control,
which I think is the same thing). I can adjust the volume to almost
nothing, so that it effectively seems to be muted, and there is no
crackling. I can also mute the volume when no application is trying to
play sound and there is no crackling.

from lspci, my audio card appears to be:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition
Audio Controller (rev 02)

I also ran the alsa-info.sh script:
