That is true for me too --- I am using gnome, even if I have KDE installed (and sometimes useing it). But: it is the same: starting gnome or KDE the only application working and playing sound is amarok. The gnome-applications do not play any sound at all. Even applictions not using gnome or KDE do not play sound at all. The applications are working, but speakers will not play any audibe tone at all!
