I tried a number of things - none of which worked.
In the end I did the following:
1) Used the Synaptic Package Manager to do a COMPLETE uninstall of
acroread
2) Used apt-get in a terminal window to reinstall it.
sudo apt-get install acroread
Preferences were lost but the "You have 1 update" icon no longer taunts
me from the top of the screen.
