I was also having this problem. After connecting the printer's usb cable, it was autodetected and added but when I tried to print a test page, the gnome cups queue browser would say something like "Printer may not be connected". The cups error log didn't really have anything of note. To fix it, I removed the printer from the Gnome printer configuration and then added it manually. It prints fine now.
