It's worth mentioning that I made the change mentioned in bug 342923:
Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy"
And I no longer get any freezes, even with effects turned on, and the
desktop is a lot quicker now.
(I have a GMA965)
