That'd be difficult for young students to do, and a little annoying

Sorry, didn't have time to really look into it.

That looks like a really viable workaround! Removing the "audio" group
default from /etc/gnome-system-tools/users/profiles makes it easy to
create new users without them belonging to the audio group.
