I got my g400 working WITH 3D acceleration. I am getting a good frame rate. I am not using a kernel framebuffer.
I'm using the driver posted above by John Dong, i.e., http://buntudot.org/people/~jdong/backports/edgy/58721/xserver-xorg-video-mga_1.4.4.dfsg.1-1jdong1~6.10prevu1_i386.deb It installed fine for me (once I remembered how to do a local repository).
