Hi Bryce, thanks for your response and advice. I couldn't work out how to revert, so I did the opposite: did a clean re-install of Jaunty Beta 6 and then upgraded the x packages one by one, rebooting in between and saving a copy of Xorg.log after each package upgrade. I worked through the different packages until I had a near-identical Xorg.log, but everything continued to work fine (not sure whether I was pleased or upset about that). Finally, after doing all the X stuff package-by-package I did a "apt-get upgrade" (427 packages). Still everything works fine.
End conclusion: phase-of-the-moon or User Error; cannot reproduce. please go ahead and close this bug report. Thanks for your support, and good luck with the Jaunty release.
