I can conform this bug on two equal Tosiba's (Satalite A110-225).

Work around work's also.

I had also this problem when loging in a second time as a different
user. I didn't check (yet) if this also solved that problem.

I suspect it has something to do with the graphical interface. Maybe
it's a combination of the 945GM Express chipset driver, de grapical
consequentes of the manipulations by the splash screen (via the kernel?)
and the way (or time involved) KDE needs to switch or close down. I
planed to add some delay in a shutdown script to give KDE some extra
time, but I didn't know where to do this . Maybe now it's a slilly idea
anyway while this workaround is perfect for me. I did not only remove
shlash but also quiet, so I can see where the system hangs if something
is wrong (like I'm used to in Debian).
