Kubuntu alt CD Release 9.04RC 4.15.09
This is debian-installer so cannot use ubuntu-bug
partman and syslog attached as errlog file
syslog was 39Meg so I cut it down to the
pertinent info where someone that knows the
process can tell what is going onj
This is not a duplicate of bug 362343 they are
similar but not the same
Steps to recreate problem
start up kubuntu alt cd
get to partitioning step
select manual partitioning
select partition of /dev/sda
press enter
(you are editing partition #3 displays ...)
arrow down to resize partition
press enter
(warning displays about not being unable to undo etc...)
Asks 'Write previous changes to disk and continue?'
Use tab key and Select Yes
press enter
minimum size imformation displays, tells about 'max' etc.
clear value in New size partition dialog box
enter 'max' (no quotes) in the New size partition dialog box
press enter
installer goes away for a while then prints the following
Error informing the kernel about modifications to partition /dev/sda5
-- Device or resource busy. This means Linux won't know about any
changes you made to /dev/sda5 until you reboot -- so you shouldn't
mount it or use it in any way before rebooting.
Selections for this action are
Ignore
Cancel
<Go Back>
Select Ignore
Displays message similar to 'Checking filesystem in partition #3 ...'
Then after a bit the following message is displayed
The test of the file system with type ext3 in partition #3 of SCSI3
(0,0,0) (sda) found uncorrected errors.
If you do not go back to the partitioning menu and correct
these errors, the partition will be used as is.
Go back to the menu and correct errors?
<Go Back> <Yes> <No>
Selecting <Yes> or <No> takes you back to the start of 'manual partitioning'
and the cycle starts all over again.
The problem(s) here are
- neither Format partition or Use as: options were altered
so No format and Don't use in effect
- An error message talks about mods to /dev/sda5 which was not
the partition selected to be altered
- Another message talks about mods to /dev/sda3 which is the
partition that is to be modified.
- /dev/sda3 does not have a file system on it. I had just sfdisk'd the
entire /dev/sda into 10 partitions and did not mkfs on any of the partitions
Even if I put an ext3 file system on /dev/sda3 and rerun same problem
Solution
The solution here is that you should not be allowed to alter or perform
any actions on a partition that is marked 'Do No Use'
