I'm starting to believe that this is an X detection/configuration
problem. While everything does work properly from the LiveCD, there are
"intriguing" differences between my Edgy and Feisty /etc/X11/xorg.conf
files.
My Edgy xorg.conf had
Option "XkbModel" "pc104"
while the Herd1 LiveCD xorg.conf has
Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
Option "XkbOptions" "lv3:ralt_switch"
These are the differences; everything else is the same in the two files,
save for the comma "," after "ATI Technologies Inc" in the Edgy
xorg.conf.
Just for fun, I made the Herd1 xorg.conf match the Edgy xorg.conf,
restarted X, and tried the installation again: Same result (black
screen, unable to see or get to the X session underneath).
BUT! In addition to the messages in gdm/:0.log reported above, the
xorg.conf had reverted to having pc105 and lv3 entries.
So I suspect some bizarre bug related to keyboard detection/management,
likely in gdm, or xorg.conf, or something else that would affect the
entire X session.
