The issue can be solved by running:
hal-set-property --udi /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer --key
power_management.can_hibernate --bool false
and
hal-set-property --udi /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer --key
power_management.can_suspend_to_disk --bool false
as root.
Afterwards hal reports that hibernation is not possible.
I just hope this will persist over reboots;-)
