Disregard the comment about 32/64-bit version.... The problem is apparently specific to Ubuntu release 8.10. ubuntu-8.04.1, evince 2.22.2, cairo 0.6.4, works as expected ubuntu-8.10, evince 2.24.1, cairo 0.8.7, demonstrates problem ubuntu-9.04-beta, evince 2.26.0, cairo 0.10.4, works as expected
Of the recent Ubuntu versions, only 8.10 demonstrates this problem.
