Leann, linux-backports-modules-jaunty seems to have fixed the problem. Thank you.
With regard to other questions: I don't know why it said 8.10. I am running 9.04 which I did a dist-upgrade to from 8.10. I misunderstood what the backports was. I thought it was for putting jaunty modules into an earlier release. I tried to attach dmesg to the first bug report but the page only allowed a single upload. Since most of the attachments were automatic, I don't know why it doesn't grab the dmesg output by itself when I run ubuntu-bug -p. Again, thanks for the help. The workaround with rmmod and modprobe worked but it is good to make it automatic for future users.
