linux-backports-modules-jaunty seems to have fixed the problem.  Thank
you.

With regard to other questions:

I don't know why it said 8.10.  I am running 9.04 which I did a dist-upgrade
to from 8.10.  I misunderstood what the backports was.  I thought it was for
putting jaunty modules into an earlier release.  I tried to attach dmesg to
the first bug report but the page only allowed a single upload.  Since most
of the attachments were automatic, I don't know why it doesn't grab the
dmesg output by itself when I run ubuntu-bug -p.

Again, thanks for the help.  The workaround with rmmod and modprobe worked
but it is good to make it automatic for future users.
