Public bug reported:

I am running Kubuntu 64-bit 9.04-rc1 on a Dell Studio XPS 16

When I boot the machine, the splash screen (the one w/ icons that fade
in as services are started) progressively becomes more and more "hacked
up" and finally returns to normal immediately before the splash screen
fades to reveal the desktop.

The desktop fade effect is also very choppy. I see rigid steps of
increasing transparency (that's the best I can describe it).

I am using the open source ATI driver (radeonhd) w/ DRI enabled. I'm not
sure if this is the problem. This was occurring in Kubuntu 8.10 also,
however not on my Dell workstation (T3400) which has a NVIDIA video
adapter and the proprietary driver.
