1) The kernel does not create, nor provide maint. if the kernel-img.conf file, which is what tells the kernel post-inst to run this hook. 2) Grub2 should be compatible with grub1 3) Grub[12] should continue to provide this compatibility symlink until an automated upgrade for kernel-img.conf to the new location is in place. Users should not have to manually fix this.
