** Description changed:

After installing Ubuntu Jaunty BETA the brightness and volume keys
  worked all correctly:

pressing either of them changed the volume/brightness and triggered
notify-osd to display nice graphics to display the current value.

Recently after one of my nearly daily updated to jaunty BETA the
function was broken in this way:

  1. volume keys do still change volume, but neither notify-osd nor the
old gnome-osd appear to display current level. Even the tray volume icon
won't change. So no graphical control of volume possible anymore.

  2. brightness keys do still change brighness, but neither notify-osd nor
the old gnome-osd appear to display current level.
+
+ This happens on an IBM Thinkpad T43, an T61 ist NOT affected.
