After much testing and retesting I eventually narrowed down to a bios
problem.

I was able to successfully load 9.04RC1 desktop live after setting the
bios to default. It would appear that there was a memory problem. I
don't understand why 8.10, 9,04beta, 8.04.1 worked but 9.04RC1 didn't,
but maybe something new in the kernel pushed the system over the edge.
