This is most probably not a firefox bug, since many other applications
have the same problem (gimp, opera, ...). Or it is a bug in *all* of
these applications (for example, they don't correctly store their non-
maximized size). But since you say that firefox flickers to its original
size shortly, that is probably not the case.

This is also not restricted to GNOME/metacity, as I am using xfce4
(Xubuntu 8.10) and I am having this problem. The difference, however, is
that for me it doesn't matter whether I double-click the title bar or
use the un-maximize button - the window always stays at maximum size
(and it does not flicker).

I'm therefore opening this for both metacity and xfwm4
