It's common e.g. in KDE that the session is saved on logout (you can't switch it off at all). Usually there are no apps open when you logout, and it's IMHO a very intuitive thing that the apps that were open at logout are present at login again.
There's another thing (which is a little bit more important). Many apps such as gaim (or skype) rely on session management since it's common on linux systems. I mean that e.g. gaim has no option to start minimized or in tray. The developers say that gaim supports session management and that's enough, so all the user has to do is to start it one-time.
