I see this in the alternate CD for Jaunty RC 1, ubuntu-9.04-rc-
alternate-i386.iso. I have it mounted as a loopback device, and the file
passes the md5sum check. I see:

I have tried running the upgrade tool as /cdrom/cdromupgrade,
/media/cdrom0/cdromupgrade, and as /media/cdrom/cdromupgrade.

This is via apt-cacher-1.5.5--all on hardy, although the only errors I
see are for files from the CD-ROM.

In order to test the script, I tried copying the contents on the CD-ROM
onto the disk, where I could modify them. In the process, I found I/O
problems, e.g:

r...@grissom:~# cp /media/cdrom0/pool/main/o/openssh/ssh_5.1p1-5ubuntu1_all.deb
.
cp: reading `/media/cdrom0/pool/main/o/openssh/ssh_5.1p1-5ubuntu1_all.deb':
Input/output error

Yet the md5sum is fine:

r...@grissom:~# md5sum -c MD5SUMS
md5sum: ubuntu-9.04-rc-alternate-amd64.iso: No such file or directory
ubuntu-9.04-rc-alternate-amd64.iso: FAILED open or read
ubuntu-9.04-rc-alternate-i386.iso: OK

ubuntu-9.04-rc-server-i386.iso: FAILED open or read
md5sum: WARNING: 6 of 7 listed files could not be read
r...@grissom:~#

(The output one would expect if only the one ISO image were present and
good.)

Unmounting and remounting the iso file gave me a good copy from the ISO
image. This time, the upgrade script then passed the point where the
above error messages occured.

I recommend the following paranoia check prior to running the actual
upgrade:

cd /cdrom && md5sum -c md5sum.txt | grep FAILED
