** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xorg

Ubuntu version: Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope although I also observed
this behavior since upgrading from 8.04 (Hardy) to 8.10 (Intrepid) and
am still seeing it after doing an upgrade to Ubuntu 9.04 (Haven't done
clean install just used dist upgrade process.)

Hardware is a Sony Vaio VGN-SZ140P Laptop with an NVidia chipset &
driver, Sony docking station, and Samsung SyncMaster 245BW monitor.

Observed behavior is with xorg package: where output of apt-cache policy xorg
is:
  xorg:
    Installed: 1:7.4~5ubuntu18
    Candidate: 1:7.4~5ubuntu18
    Version table:
   *** 1:7.4~5ubuntu18 0
          500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages
          100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

  Expected behavior is:
  1) Upon booting the system would accurately detect video capabilities and
settings or at least keep settings from previous sessions where they've been
manually set
  2) if manually set through NVIDIA X Server Settings tool the "Save to X
Configuration File" would make doing this each time unnecessary.

Observed behavior is upon each reboot when the laptop is docked and connected
to the external monitor, both the laptop display and the external monitor show
the same thing and the resolution is very low so everything appears very big on
the screen. I then:
  1) go into System > Administration > NVIDIA X Server Settings
  2) change from X Server Information to "X Server Display Configuration"
  3) Change "Model:" from "Nvidia Default Flat Panel (DFP-0 on GPU-0)" to
"Samsung SyncMaster (DFP-1 on GPU-0)"
  4) Change "Resolution" to "Auto" or "1920 x 1200" to take advantage of
display capabilities.
  5) Click on "Apply"
  6) Click on "Quit" (and subsequently confirm intent to Quit)
which allows me to take advantage of the resolution capabilities of the
external monitor for the current session, but requires me to repeat these steps
on each reboot.

When I've attempted to use the "Save to X COnfiguration File" button in
the NVidia X Server Settings tool to save the changes I get an error
dialog that says: "Unable to remove old X config backup file
  '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup'.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. (I can be reached
