Expected to see the gnome desktop after the bootscreen (have activated
auto-login for user)

Ubuntu bootscreen came up, but when it should have changed to the
gnome-desktop or at least the login-screen, I got weird blue-green patterns
with the mouse frozen in the middle - then it went black, then the pattern came
back. This cycled like four times and then it finally froze with the strange
pattern. Then only a cold start of the notebook helped (pressing the
power-button for a few seconds). After a new start, it occurred again.
Then I used the grub-entry for rescue-possibilities (can't remember the exact
name) which lead me to a menu, where I could try to automatically correct my
graphical settings, which it did and now it seems to be working again (at least
this time).
Very likely is related to the update I did via apt-get update, apt-get
upgrade half an hour ago.
