Thanks for your bugreport.
This is most likely a duplicate of #257639 - packagekit is trying to
open the cache at the same time as synaptic/update-manager and that
causes the error. Its a race condition somewhere (we don't know exactly
where yet).
Please check via a terminal (or synaptic) if you have packagekit installed:
$ dpkg -l packagekit
If not, I will un-duplicate it again (but so far all reports like this had it)
