Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Ubuntu 8.10,
network-manager 0.7~~svn20081018t105859-0ubuntu1.8.10.2
network-manager-gnome 0.7~~svn20081020t000444-0ubuntu1.8.10.2

If the user presses Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to restart GDM, network-manager
resets the network connection to whichever is flagged as the default
connection. This is sub-optimal and should not happen if the user has
multiple connections configured.

We can test this by setting up an additional connection with (for
example) a different dns server and then selecting that connection using
the network-manager applet and then checking /etc/resolv.conf for the
presence of the new dns server. After restarting GDM using
Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, the default connection will now be selected and
/etc/resolv.conf will have the default connection's dns server.

What I expect to happen is network-manager to remember the state of the
network connection and keep (or reapply if necessary) it when GDM
restarts. I see three potential cases: a) GDM is stopped due to system
shutdown b) gdm is restarted due to a patch c) GDM is restarted by the
user. In cases b) and c), GDM should remember (write to a
lastconnection config file?) the last state it was in and reapply it
after restart or not touch it. Only in case a) should the default be
used.

** Affects: network-manager (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
