** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: compiz

after upgrading to jaunty RC1 from intrepid, Desktop effects sometimes
crash when clicking on picture links in firefox. When trying to reenable
them through the appearance settings, they don't get reenabled, even
though the appearance applet seems to think so. At lest the radio button
stays next to "normal" after I am asked if I want to keep the settings
(and I click on keep settings).

If I try to start compiz manually at this point, I get the following
  output:

  nel...@enterprise:~$ compiz
  Checking for Xgl: not present.
xset q doesn't reveal the location of the log file. Using fallback
/var/log/Xorg.0.log

/usr/bin/compiz.real (video) - Warn: No 8 bit GLX pixmap format, disabling
YV12 image format
  Aborted

Note that compiz does not exit, it just sits there after the "aborted"
message, but there are no desktop effects and no acceleration.
I have desktop effects again if I log out and back in. It seems to work fine
until I start using firefox.
+
+ update: Actually not only does compiz not work, any OpenGL application stops
working (tested with games, googleearth, etc.)
+ This also happens after a while if I don't run compiz at all, just use a few
3D applications.
+
+ I forgot to add my hardware in the original description: nvidia 6600GT,
+ binary driver that comes with jaunty (32bit), dual athlon MP 2GHz.
+
+ All of this worked fine in Intrepid.
