I tried the amd64 cd but it had the same crash and then I disabled AHCI in the bios but the crash was still the same. Finally I disconnected the IDE hard disk leaving just the IDE CDROM and the SATA hard disk connected and there was no crash and the installation is complete.
So it seems related to the IDE hard disk somehow. I checked from the livecd when it was connected and qtparted showed the drive normally and looked correct.
