Apparently it's really iwlagn. After unloading the module (sudo rmmod
iwlagn) rebooting works fine. A single line message is printed on screen
before the reboot actually takes place, but I am not able to read it.

I will now try the latest wireless module version using
http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Download#Gettingcompat-
wirelessonUbuntu hoping this issue is a module issue (not one with
Ubuntu kernel patches) and may have been fixed already.
