Squeezing the problem into a smaller box:

The long delays seem very clearly associated with asking Nautilus to
expand a directory in the existing list view window by clicking on the
arrow to its left ("turning the arrow down") Doing that just now on a
directory of about 700 (text) files took about 104 seconds to show the
content list, AND Nautilus remand hung/busy for several minutes
afterward, with system monitor showing heavy CPU use.

Asking to list the same directory in a NEW WINDOW, as LIST VIEW, took
less than 15 seconds to complete, with no subsequent hang.

Asking for it in a new window as ICON VIEW took about 2 seconds, again
with no hang.

To clarify, the very long delay on "turn the arrow down" response is a
radical degradation first seen 2009/04/21, after the latest set of
updates. It now happens every time on every large directory I try, so
solidly reproducible on this system. (The hang after the listing
appears seems somewhat random, or perhaps the time at which the window
updates is semi-random within the overall delay.)
