I am also having this issue with spellings and I am glad I found this bug because it solved my problem. However, I imagine this is going to be very confusing to users that install Ubuntu 9.04.
Firefox on my system was actually using "en_AU" as the default. Maybe previous versions of Ubuntu only listed the full names of the dictionaries.
