Bryan, Janty 2.6.28 kernel seems to have fixed the problem. I am able to burn ISO images to CD-RW with the same hardware setup on my ThinkPad X32 (docked in a docking station with an IDE CD Drive in Ultraybay, and an external USB CD Writer).
