Public bug reported:

This is a bit overwhelming, but here's what I know:

-I'm running the 32-bit version of Ubuntu 9.04.

-I'm not sure how to respond to the 'package version' question since
the problem occurs across media players.

-What I expect to happen of course, is to click on a video file (in any
format I've tried--.mpg;.mov;.wmv;.avi;.ts) and have Totem or VLC play
the file

-What does happen when I click the file is a launching of my player of
choice for a brief second and an immediate closing of that same player
window. I can repeat the task as often as I like, but the result is the
same, even across players (so far I've tried Totem with both the
GStreamer plugins and the Xine plugins, as well as the VLC media player
and MPlayer...no difference in performance). Also affected is the player
that opens within Firefox if a video is launched. Firefox does not
crash, though the player within it seems to as the window contents
display a flat gray color and all playback controls disappear.

I found a similar instance reported in Bug #327082, but our specs were
different enough that I decided to file a new one anyway. Also, that
report seemed to focus on Totem and not any other player, though the
symptoms were very similar.
