Thank you for reporting this bug and helping make Ubuntu better. We
would like some more information from you.
1. Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn` as a separate attachment
2. For the sake of testing, please remove/rename the file
~/.config/monitors.xml (~ stands for your home directory) if present.
3. In the "Device" section of you /etc/X11/xorg.conf, please add the following
line that will make the log tell more about how it is choosing the resolution:
Option "ModeDebug" "true"
With this option on, log out and in again and upload the /var/log/Xorg.0.log
that results from this. Since your problem does not happen every time, please
upload one log for the "good" case and one for the "bad" case. This will make
it easier to find out what goes wrong in the bad case.
4. Please also upload the output of `xrandr --verbose` from the good
case, and from after you force the resolution with xrandr in the bad
case. There may be differences there that give a clue to what is going
on.
