Partially resolved[1] (for me) by following the instructions at: http://www.ubuntugeek.com/howto-enable-system-sound-in-ubuntu-intrepid.html which installs the libcanberra(x) 0.10 version from gkulyk's PPA vs the Intrepid 0.6 (http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/libcanberra-gtk0) version.
https://launchpad.net/~gkulyk/+archive/ppa Changelog libcanberra (0.10-0ubuntu1~ppa1) intrepid; urgency=low * New upstream release. * debian/patches/fix-logout-script.patch: - removed, fixed upstream. * debian/patches/libcanberra-login-sound-desktop.patch: - taken from Mandriva, to avoid race-condition. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^ https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libcanberra https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libcanberra libcanberra is currently at 0.12 BTW: http://0pointer.de/lennart/projects/libcanberra/ [1] Partially resolved only as the results are not consistent in all situations; works when the system is fully shut down (powered off) and then restarted and/or with logout/login, but does not work if the system is simply restarted (rebooted).
