I have Toshiba U400, microphone was very soft on Jaunti and Ibex. No boost button. After upgrading my ALSA version to 1.0.19, my microphone is MUCH louder. Please note that I don't know much about ubuntu so I won't necessarily recommend everyone to do this. But I'm stopping to try and fix this any other way since it worked so easily.
