I have the exact same problem. Upgraded to the Jaunty release this evening; since the upgrade noticed that Synaptic hangs indefinitely if you try to modify preferences and click either Ok or Apply. Also noticed that CPU usage is extremely high after doing this and the only way out is to kill Synaptic.
Any help here? Does anyone have a work around? I've tried some of the solutions posted including reinstalling synaptic, moving the /root/.synaptic folder etc - nothing has worked so far.
