Hello
I traced my problem to the swap partition. I had reorganized my 250GB
hard drive. In doing so, I moved the swap partition to a different part
of the disk. I used gparted to do this.

Unfortunately, on moving the swap partition to another part of the disk,
Gparted did not update the UUID of the swap partition in /etc/fstab.

Consequently, Ubuntu was constantly looking for the Linux swap partition
using its old UUID. Correcting the swap partition's UUID manually in
/etc/fstab cured the problem instantly and permanently.
Regards, Rob
